Tentacles & Wings Partners with College of Marin to Promote Equity in Art Classes!

While we remain committed to offering scholarships to individual students, we want to make an effort to support more students in Marin. Therefore, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on the establishment of a Studio Art Tool Lending Library at the College of Marin (COM). The COM Art Department currently offers studio classes in 13 subjects, including ceramics, sculpture, painting, jewelry, printmaking and more. On average, just over 400 students enroll in art classes each semester, many of them to fulfill an art General Education requirement for transfer to a four-year college.  In nearly every art class, a student must purchase materials and tools and the cost of these can be significant. For example, while "beginning drawing" sounds like it should be inexpensive, the out-of-pocket cost is over $100.

In order to remove a financial barrier that can hinder students from enrolling in art courses - and by extension diminish a lifelong engagement with the visual arts, Tentacles & Wings is partnering with the COM Art Dept. to establish a Studio Art Tool Lending Library.

This Library will provide course-specific tool kits with all of the implements and materials a beginning student will need for any given art course. Collectively, we are committed to our vision of a Studio Art Tool Lending Library because we believe it will enable all students who wish to study and engage in the visual arts to do so, without concern about the cost of the tools they will need.

 We are asking for your support to help us fulfill this vision and assist local Marin students who cannot afford the costs associated with taking an art course.  This directly addresses our mission of Tentacles & Wings: to help art students fulfill their goals, whether that goal be a career in art or fulfilling a requirement for transfer to a four-year college to further their education.
